ZINC
Number 30 on the "periodic table" of elements
Tests the presence of ions of Zinc to a high degree of accuracy to
detect contamination in the body and on a wide range of materials in your environment
Zinc is a trace element that is essential for human health. Insufficient zinc can lead to loss of appetite,
decrease sense of taste and smell, slow wound healings and skin sores. Zinc insufficiency may even cause birth
defects. The body can handle large concentrations of zinc but too much zinc can cause health problems
Sources
Zinc occurs naturally in air, water and soil but zinc concentrations in them are rising unnaturally. Most of the
zinc are added through industrial activities such as mining, coal waste and waste combustion and steel processing.
The world's zinc production is still rising, which means more are added to the environment daily.
Water pollution from industrial waste is a major problem. Zinc increases the acidity of waters.
Some fish can accumulate zinc in their bodies and can lead to contamination higher up the food chain
Toxicity
Symptoms of zinc toxicity can occur if more than 2 gm of zinc are ingested. Zinc levels in excess of
500 ppm may cause clinical signs of toxicity. However, Zinc deficiency can cause health problems too ,
such as, skin lesions, Normal zinc intake is around 100 - 215 milligrams per kilogram in weight.
Toxicity Symptoms
Too much zinc causes stomach cramps, skin irritations, vomiting, nausea and anemia. Very high levels
of zinc can damage the pancreas and interfere with protein metabolism. It can cause arterioscleriosis.
Acute exposure to zinc chloride can cause respiratory disorders. Zinc poisoning can lead liver and
kidney failures as well as anemia. Zinc can be a danger to the unborn or new born children. They
can be exposed to zinc contamination through the mother.
Toxicity Limits
A reading of zinc in urine of between 0.25 - 2.0 ppm is considered normal.
